When they first put it in a Mondeo I assumed they'd follow both paths (small FWD and large RWD) in parallel, but they decided to concentrate on the SUVs, presumably because of financial constraints, and therefore focused on designing robust transmissions rather than small ones. Later work developing the compact design, including several patents, seems to have opened up new production possibilities. I await future announcements, in particular concerning the small FWD they're supposed to be building, with interest.
