Shares approach record levels

THE share market has defied a negative lead from Wall Street and a drop in the oil price to open just short of its record highs.

Strength from the financial sector and the big mining companies pushed the market sharply higher, closing in on intraday records achieved over the past few months.

The top traded stock was Sherlock Bay Nickel, with 16.25 million shares changing hands for a total value of $828,311. The stock gained 0.4 of a cent to 5.1 cents.
