Trials by Nestlé Foodservices of a strip, which indicates how long a catering pack has been open, could pave the way for integration into sensitive or high-value consumer packs, says the company behind the technology.
Timestrip smart labels incorporate a liquid dye which, once triggered, migrates at a precise rate across a calibrated time scale. Already in use by US foodservice companies, the technology is now being trialled by Nestlé in the UK. "Once the trials are concluded, we will then explore more elegant, integrated solutions," says Timestrip joint chief executive Reuben Isbitsky.
In Europe, uptake is being driven by new hygiene and traceability legislation.
