I am a keen photographer and I increased my holding in Jessops following this statement made by the company and my observation of the way that serious photographers are now changing their Film SLR cameras for Digital versions -
"Although we retain a cautious view of near term trading, Christmas is not
historically as important for Jessops as it is for some other retailers. We are
encouraged by the continued strong performance of digital SLR camera sales, by
the growth we have achieved in the digital processing market and by the
performance of our new format stores trial".
Last year the company was caught out by the low level of demand for cameras after Christmas - anyone who takes photos knows that the months of January, February and March are not the months in which to be inspired to go and buy a new camera. No! It is when the Flowers Bloom in the Spring that photographers tend to be tempted by the latest offerings.
There are bargains to be had on line, but there are postage costs to be paid and it is not so easy to get a problem fixed if the apparatus goes wrong or the instructions are not in English. Jessops have a policy of price matching so if you can demonstrate the ability to get a lower price the local store will ring Head Office and ask if they can match the price- at least that is what they did for me and it worked out OK!
