An alternative, (and probably wrong view) is that the media attention gold is getting, and which can often be taken as a sign that the market is getting ahead of itself, could actually be a sign of something else, someting different for a change.

Given the poor return on equities, it is very faintly conceivable that some sort of panic or hysteria effect could occur and sweep gold off its feet. Joe Public could go more long and force the commercials to go even shorter.
