The Really Useful Gold Thread
fatso - Tue, 03 Jan 06 :
May I also express my surprise at disparageing remarks made above about the Gold
& Silver hoarders? Trading Gold is all very well and profitable activity for some.
Please remember that Gold Hoarding, a basic activity meant to protect our wealth,
has been the pastime of ancient inhabitants of those islands as witness by gold hoards popping up from earth and some old walls with the help of metal detectors.
Admittedly, those suckers who lost their crock of gold were the losers but how many other ancient Romans managed to save their loot from the grubby hands of Boudicca, tax inspectors, medeaval feudal lords, roundheads, custom officers and some such scum after our wealth?
Some 18 months ago I have noticed that Krugerrand, trading before at some £263,
went down on ebay to something like £227-233. All due to jump in value of the Pound Sterling against the Greenback from some £1.55 to £ 1.85. To the derision of some californian based Guru on polish language discussion group I went shopping.
Krugs, swiss gold franks small golden ingots and 100oz silver bricks. You name it I bought it. I can confirm here that the safe deposit box can hide up to £20K worth of the stuff.Having sated my appetite for hoarding stuff I moved to start collecting like a magpie the stuff which shines and has to be displayed to its best advantage. I chose to specialise in English Silver tea sets. Nothing fancy, would buy generally on eBay a set from between the wars period at the scrap value+ £ 100 or £150+ added for beauty, workmanship and an antique value.
This type of investing proved to be quite profitable as the worm turned and I did much beter out of hoarding then giving my hard earned cash to market makers and some such scum of the earth. I intend to dispose via eBay and foreign auction house of some of the loot. Krugerrands go on eBay for some £100 more then purchased. Collectable silver seems to do nicely as well. Some things might be a tad difficult to flog to the public, eg magnificent 88 oz silver salver which does belong at the princely table but I found in some God-forsaken Cleckheaton and got for £500. Any princes here?
