SAN FRANCISCO (AFX) -- Home Depot said Tuesday it plans to sell appliances
for the home online in a move to expand upon its in-store sales business for
such products.
The Atlanta-based home improvement retailer said it will offer more than 1,800
name-brand products from categories ranging from dishwashers to freezers. Home
Depot began selling appliances in its retail stores in September 2001.
With its Internet site, Home Depot is attempting to gain a larger share of the
appliance market, which is led by Sears . In the third-quarter, Home Depot's
core market share of appliances rose 40 percent from the year-ago period.
The company said prices for appliances sold online will not differ from those
sold in stores, nor will prices vary by region.
Home Depot said the online site will allow customers to search for product
information and to compare items. It also said an employee will contact
customers by telephone to confirm and arrange details such as delivery dates and
times and offer extended service coverage plans.
