Surely the need for UTN`s services must be growing when you take into account its government contacts:

A New Year energy saving drive will be launched by the Local Government Association as new figures reveal that the spiralling costs of gas, petrol and electricity prices have increased the amount spent by councils on fuel by up to £250million in a year.

The research reveals that at the beginning of 2005, before the rapid price hikes in energy supplies, local authorities spent:

• £425million on electricity
• £280million on gas
• £500million on petrol

The coldest winter in decades has been forecast by the Met Office. With gas prices rising by 32.4%, electricity by 24.1% and petrol/diesel up by 10%, local councils now face a combined energy cost of £1.45billion – a rise of £243million (20%) in the last 12 months.

Councils are responsible for ensuring that :-
• The most vulnerable in society are kept warm – such as elderly residents in care homes
• Street lighting – to ensure people can walk home safely
• Gritting – to make sure the roads are kept free from ice

The Local Government Association will urge councils across the country to redouble their efforts to put in as many energy efficient measures as possible to help keep costs down and reduce damage to the environment.

Chairman of the Local Government Association, Sir Sandy Bruce-Lockhart said:-

“Local authorities spend millions ensuring that the frail and vulnerable will be kept warm during the cold winter months. Yet, like all electricity and gas users, councils are seeing their energy bills going through the roof.

“We cannot simply switch off lights or heating to save energy in the way that homeowners can. It’s during the darkest and coldest days of winter that people rely most on councils across England to deliver vital services such as street lighting, heating and gritting.

“With councils already making massive efficiency savings and having to tighten their belts, the rising energy costs will be a deeply worrying unwelcome headache to local councils.”
