JAKARTA (AFX) - A moderate earthquake, measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale,
hit Indonesia's easternmost province of Papua today, causing no damage, but
sparking panic on fears tidal waves that devastated countries in the Indian
Ocean earlier this week.
The quake struck at 11:51 am (02:51 GMT) and was centered inland, some 25
kilometers southwest of provincial capital Jayapura at a depth of 20 km, said
meteorology office spokesman Rahmat.
"There was no damage reported, but the earthquake sparked panic among the
people in Jayapura," he said.
A resident told Elshinta radio that he and everyone else in town had rushed
out of their office buildings and homes when the earth began to shake.
The quake came after a massive magnitude 9.0 shock centered in the Indian
Ocean off Sumatra island caused devastating tsunami waves that left more than
45,000 people dead on the island and killed tens of thousands across Asia.
Papua and Aceh sit 4,750 km apart at the far extremes of the Indonesian
archipelago, which lies atop the collision point of three continental plates,
causing frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
