Just for Speccy...latest data (to 1998, LOL) from the Department of Transport website
"2.3 London bus journeys account for nearly a third of all bus journeys in Great Britain. In recent years buses have attracted more passengers in London, where buses are not subject to the deregulated system; but there had previously been falls in the number of London bus journeys. Latest figures (1997/98) show ridership across Great Britain as a whole remained at a similar level to the previous year, contrasting with the long term, steady decline until the mid 1990s. Local bus journeys in England actually increased by 1%. Over the last decade, bus use has continued to decline overall in the Metropolitan areas (Figure 3), but there is evidence of an upturn of 5% in the West Midlands since 1996/97."
2.6 So the bus still has a significant role to play in the nation's transport. It provides essential transport: over eighty million journeys a week for shopping, travel to school and work, or social purposes (Figure 6).
