Denmark
Arriva is the first private company to be awarded passenger rail franchises tendered by the Danish state.
In January 2003, Arriva commenced operation of services in Mid and North Jutland on eight-year concessions. Arriva carries five per cent of all passengers in the country and covers 15 per cent of the national network.
Arriva was the top performing rail operator in Denmark with a total reliability of 98 per cent and won bonuses under its contract for each of the last three quarters of 2003.
During 2004, Arriva introduced 29 new Alstom Coradia Lint trains fitted with a new generation of environmentally friendly EURO III engines.
Arriva is also the largest operator of bus services in Denmark with a market share of over 40 per cent in Copenhagen and over 30 per cent of regional services.
Characteristics of the market
Competitive tendering for rail services is being progressively introduced to the Danish market. The Danish government will invite tenders for a further ten per cent of t he national rail network and Arriva will submit bids for new franchises.
