LONDON (AFX) - Supermarket giant Tesco PLC said its UK mobile phone
business, Tesco Mobile, now has more than 500,000 subscribers thanks to strong
sales in the run-up to Christmas.
The company said Tesco Mobile, a joint venture with mobile telecoms operator
O2, had breached the symbolic half-million subscriber threshold 14 months after
launch.
"This is a great milestone to achieve in such a short space of time," said
Matthew Key, Tesco Mobile chairman and chief financial officer at O2 UK.
"Tesco Mobile has gone from strength to strength this year."
Tesco Mobile said it plans to extend the sale of SIM cards to the Tesco
Express chain of local convenience stores after promising trial sales earlier
this month.
Tesco Mobile currently sells handsets and SIM cards, which give consumers
access to the O2 network, in Tesco supermarkets.
Tesco shares were up 1/4 pence at 320-1/4 in mid-morning trade.
