A Merry Xmas to all my readers - even the innumerable filtered ones. Xmas, of course, is a pagan festival and should really be on the winter solstice. The Christians nicked it and just shoved it forward a few days and claimed it for themselves. They realised that the peasantry were not about to lose one of their better 'holidays' and it became a Holy Day! Very cunning. Hmmmmm. Read Richard Dawkins 'The God Delusion'.
If you want to watch one film over Xmas then you should try 'The Remains of the Day' - I think it is on channel 5 on Xmas Day afternoon. Anthony Hopkins at his best - and Emma Thompson at her best. Odd that the plot was written by a Japanese gentleman.
I was very sad than I could not discover any ballet. No repeats of Fonteyn and Nureyev. Her dancing of the Rose Adagio in 1949 in New York brought the whole of America to her feet and she ended up starving and living on cornflakes. Roberto Arias did not serve her well but her dancing was sublime and nothing else matters. Like Joan Sutherland she was beyond belief. I was fortunate enough to see both herself and Nureyev at their peak.
