Local authorities should support electric vehicles

Advantage West Midlands chairman, Nick Paul, is asking the area's local councils to invest in green technology. The Premium Automotive Research and Development (PARD) programme is funded with £33m from Advantage West Midlands and was launched in 2003 to support the automotive industry through innovation and technology development. There are an estimated 5,000 local authority vans, lorries and cars in the West Midlands, with Birmingham City Council alone having a fleet of around 2,000. Advantage West Midlands has co-funded a £1.2m programme of applied research in core fuel cell technology as well as supporting Coventry-based Modec to establish a state-of-the-art production facility to launch its innovative Transit-sized electric delivery vehicle.
