I hope I don't bore anyone but I've definitely learnt a lesson from last year and I think some of us (especially us relatively inexperienced ones) could learn a little from it too.
This time last year I set up several fantasy portfolios on iii - I included some similar stocks in several portfolios. Whilst they were all small caps many were highly speculative.
The portfolio that did the best returned 99% These were stocks I considered to be in strong growth areas and highly profitable on low PEs.
The others had mixed performance ranging from 20% profit to around 10% loss. My big winners had their performance diluted badly by the high risk plays.
The moral of the story - don't chase the HIGH RISK plays and don't OVER-TRADE! It just give cash to mm's and brokers etc.
For info the portfolio that returned 99% included NLR, MOB, IDS, MNW (added in June), AVG, and WNN. I was happy with how I'd done this year until I looked back at this portfolio.
