Scottish entrepreneurs take up poll positions
MORE than ten Scots feature in a new survey of the UK’s 100 leading entrepreneurs, published today.
The study, conducted by business magazine Management Today, looks at the ability of entrepreneurs to take risks, identify gaps in the market and display perseverance in achieving their goals.
How well each business has developed sales and employment over the past five years is measured instead of simply recording profits growth.
The top-ranked Scot, at number nine, is health club tycoon Duncan Bannatyne, who left his Clydebank school aged just 15. It is thought he could be about to raise up to £100 million from the sale of his 32-strong chain of fitness clubs.
Former Celtic director Willie Haughey, who runs Glasgow-based City Refrigeration, is the next Scot on the list at 17. Other Scotland-based business people making it into the league table include Fred Duncan, the head of Grampian Country Food Group, and car showroom chain owner Arnold Clark.
Bill Gammell, head of Edinburgh-based oil and gas explorer Cairn Energy, is ranked last among the Scots on the list, in 87th place, despite being named Ernst & Young’s entrepreneur of the year in October.
Michael Newton, who owns a Warrington-based firm involved in the development of products for the CCTV industry, tops the overall list.
Meanwhile, the youngest person is 33-year-old Paul Harrison, who co-owns the North Yorkshire-based housebuilding firm Harron Homes.
