Abstract
The global market for packaged food was worth almost US$1,122 billion in 2002, up by 1.2% in current terms from 2001. To some extent the return to positive growth in 2002 after two years of decline was due to the strengthening of the euro against the US dollar, reflecting the importance of Western Europe to global packaged food sales.
However, growth in 2002 was also driven by real terms growth in Western European sales driven by increased demand for both healthy and easy-to-prepare packaged food, such as reduced fat ready meals. Value sales buoyancy in smaller regional markets such as Eastern Europe and Australasia also helped to offset declining sales in regions beset with economic difficulties. In 2002, these regions principally included Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Africa and the Middle East.
