Meal-snack hybrid products are becoming
increasingly important in satisfying consumer
demand for ‘light meals’, which in Europe and
the US, was worth US$264 billion in 2003
according to a Just-food.com report.
This report offers an analysis of the increasingly
lucrative light meal occasion by sizing the
number and value of such occasions by day
part and country.
Highlights of the Report Are:
There will be an extra 11.7 billion light
breakfast, lunch and evening meal occasions
in 2008 relative to 2003. Corresponding data
for the US shows there will be an extra
13.6 billion consumption occasions over the
same time period.
Increasingly in-between mealtime occasions
are not impulse-driven grazing, especially with
the rise of ‘flexi-eating’ behaviour. The number
of European in-between mealtime occasions that
constitute ‘light meals’ is forecast to rise from
47 billion in 2003 to 53.8 billion in 2008.
In the US the trend is even more pronounced.
There are more than twice as many on-the-go
light meal occasions compared to regular full
main meal occasions. This is because many light
meal occasions are defined as such because of
the informal and hurried way in which they are
often consumed.
