Tomorrow the revellers will be out and many may be up to their ears in alcohol celebrating the end of a year that has seen gaming stocks hammered, an astonishing rally in mining stocks, and the apparently unstoppable rise of Xstrata, up over 80pc on the year.


While Saturday Questor failed to jump on the mining bandwagon it has in general managed to pick winners.

Sportingbet, tipped at 413½p in February, is a notable exception. The stock first tumbled in July after the US signalled its desire to crack down on online gambling, with the arrest of BetonSports' chief executive for alleged racketeering. But the real damage was done when at the end of September US Congress approved new legislation to prevent credit-card companies from collecting payments for bets. The shares plunged to a low of 37¼p and have finished the year trading around the 40p mark, leaving Questor nursing a 90pc loss.

While severe, this was the only howler and was more than offset by a series of glittering performances.
