La Tasca, the Spanish-themed restaurant chain, lost 5 per cent to 132½p despite announcing expectation-beating first-half profit. Analysts at Panmure Gordon questioned the sustainability of the company’s earnings and advised clients to take profits above 140p a share.

Indian Outsourcing Services leapt 42.9 per cent to 5p on speculation the shell company set up to capitalise on the boom in outsourcing in the subcontinent was about to announce its first acquisition.

GW Pharmaceuticals fell 5.7 per cent after reports that a patient who had taken part in clinical trials of Sativex, the drug developer’s cannabis-based medicine, later died of kidney failure.

Aerobox fell 9 per cent to 6.25p as the air cargo container group confirmed it was in the midst of a fundraising. The company was believed to be looking for £3m of additional working capital.

WSP Group rose 2.5 per cent to 372p after the engineering consultancy announced the appointment of Marisa Cassoni, currently finance director at the Royal Mail Group, to its board of directors.

Contentfilm, the independent film producer, put on 18.2 per cent to 3.25p after posting its first operating profit since 2001.

SWP, a supplier of specialist products to the construction industry, rose 21.3 per cent to 45½p after announcing narrowing full-year losses and saying order intake in recent months had been buoyant.

Sareum Holdings climbed 16.7 per cent to 1.75p as the biotechnology group said it had entered an agreement to provide computational chemistry expertise to Karus Therapeutics, a company developing drugs to treat cancer and heart disease.

Delling Group rose 6.1 per cent to 13p as the marketing and communications company outlined plans to expand its outsourcing operations in Poland and the Baltic region.

Inventive Leisure was flat at 171p despite speculation that a 190p a share bid for the vodka bar group was imminent.

Uranium Mining Corporation slid 11.5 per cent to 27p after saying it had terminated negotiations to buy a “substantial” oil and gas asset in Kazakhstan.

Serica Energy jumped 8.9 per cent to 115½p on its first day of trading on Aim. The oil explorer raised £64m via a 95p a share placing through JPMorgan Cazenove.

Great Eastern Energy also enjoyed its debut, rising 19.3 per cent to 120½p as it became the first Indian company to list on Aim. Great Eastern, which hopes to extract natural gas from undeveloped coalfields, raised £12.1m via a 101p a unit placing of global depository rights through Arden Partners.
