The unlikeliest must-have gift this year in an affluent university city has emerged as a spanking new, hand-made Aston Martin with a price tag of as much as £185,000.

In a move that has stunned the luxury car makers, a new Aston Martin dealership in Cambridge, the first in the city for 14 years, has sold more than £15 million-worth of cars in the three months since it opened.

While the other 14 Aston Martin dealerships in the UK sell an average of 86 cars a year, the Lancaster dealership at Harston, near Cambridge, has notched up 155 sales since September. Not that too many of the cars have been delivered - on some models that can take up to four years. Aston Martin only makes 1,200 cars a year for the UK market.

Nigel Cardall, 53, who runs his own property maintenance company, has just put in his order for an £87,000 V8 Vantage, although the father of four from Ware, Herts, is not expecting delivery until late next year.

"It's just one of those things that people aspire to, and something I've wanted ever since I was a kid," he said.
