Coal offers hope of new gas supplies
New optimism as interested parties press case for clean energy from seams under region and off its coastline
A new era for coal, with Yorkshire at the centre of it, could start in 2006.
A report due early this year is expected to lay out a plan for drilling into coal under the Firth of Forth and turning it into gas underground.
Government and private interests are poised to collaborate on the costs and the organisation required to fast-track the idea into a working experiment – and signal that underground gas-ification of coal (UCG) is an idea whose time has come.
