If the trial is successful, the company has to run an even larger phase-three trial before the product can be sold commercially.
Down the track, it hopes the same stem cells could be used to regenerate the discs of patients with early-stage disease to avoid the need for spinal fusion.
"I don't think it's that long in the future, we are talking the next couple of years," Prof Itescu said.
"If it works it will change the paradigm of treating these chronic degenerative conditions."
The company is also involved in pilot trials in Australia using adult stem cells to long bone fractures and heart disease, although those treatments involve the patient's own stem cells.
