The earth is an oblate spheroid and December 21st does not have to be the longest night but it probably is. We will now start moving towards summer at the rate of about two minutes a day. Since coward Paddy has done a runner I might as well teach you something. QFI is certainly not interesting.
We presently have a high pressure and this means fog in the winter - it might only be 50 feet thick. The problem for aircraft is that they could get airborne but if they had an engine failure and needed to land they would be snookered. I suspect some of the long haul stuff has gone but short haul flights would be cancelled. It can be very confusing. I recall the problems with early morning mist. You could fly over the airfield at 2000 feet and everything looked OK but when you turned finals and got down to 50 feet everything disappeared. I hope you find this useful.
Read Charles Condamine on the oblate spheroid stuff. Did you know that the Greenwich meridian is not as accurate as the sides of the Great Pyramid at Gizeh?
