Sandy's Headwaters creates division to use a new technology to tap refineries' sludge

Headwaters Inc. has created a new business unit to deploy a technology that it maintains can greatly improve the efficiency of refineries that use "heavy oil" as a feedstock for the production of gasoline and other petroleum products.
The new division that will operated under the Headwaters Heavy Oil moniker is expected to begin generating revenue for the South Jordan-based company next year, said Kirk A. Benson, Headwater's chairman and chief executive.
"We've been working on developing this technology for several years," Benson said, indicating that the Utah company last year completed a commercial scale run of its "heavy oil upgrading catalyst technology" at a refinery in Europe.
