Further to Mike Hawkins' message of the 17 October 2006 regarding the timing of an announcement regarding the 24th Oil and Gas Licensing Round, I wish to update you about the latest position.
As Mike noted, DTI is carrying out the Appropriate Assessment of the environmental effects of awarding licences on relevant conservation sites which is required by law. We have now consulted on the draft and have received responses, some of which raise concerns regarding the possible environmental effects of potential awards. We are addressing these issues as a matter of urgency.
We recognise that this delay is frustrating, and may cause real problems for some companies, but it is important that environmental concerns are fully considered. At the moment I cannot give an exact timing for a decision on awards but in the meantime I would like to thank you for your patience.
