GeneThera Announces Results from Ongoing Validation Study for Its Diagnostic Test on Live Animals for Chronic Wasting Disease
WHEAT RIDGE, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 2003--GeneThera, Inc. (OTCBB: GTHA), announced today that they have completed testing on 141 elk blood samples from South Dakota. Four animals in the study tested positive. GeneThera's scientists utilized the very sensitive and accurate Fluorogenic PCR technology and a very precise mathematical method to analyze the data. Samples were tested in duplicate and compared to a confirmed negative control. Negative and positive samples showed a significant degree of statistical difference.
The company's method offers several important advantages over the current brain tissues testing method. The current method involves severing the animal's head from its body and shipping it to state laboratories. A sample of the brain stem is taken and a scientist checks for "holes" in the tissue, a sign that the disease has progressed into the brain stem and has started to take effect on the animal. In contrast, the company believes their method is more sensitive, accurate and faster. It requires only a small amount of blood from live animals.
Dr. Antonio Milici, CEO of GeneThera, Inc. stated, "We are very pleased with the progress we made to validate our test for CWD. Because of the sensitivity of our test compared to the current subjective method, we expect to detect signs of CWD at much earlier stages. This would be a tremendous step forward in the containment of the disease." He went on to say, "This is just the tip of the iceberg for us, with this technology, we can now move quickly into testing and therapeutic vaccination for many related diseases such as, Mad Cow Disease, E. coli 0157: H7, Foot and Mouth Disease, and others."
The company is currently planning to test a larger number of animals to further validate the method
