Proteome Sciences results in big news CJD + Stroke tests

Stanman,
You say "Most strokes can be diagnosed as such by a 1st-yr med student" and I am sure you know more of this than me. However it is a fact that, in the USA, some 35,000 patients a year are discharged from hospital as not having suffered a stroke but who subsequently die or are disabled by a stroke. Once a suitable test is available to my mind this is 35,000 lawsuits waiting to happen.
The Proteome test, which is 100% specific, does work on small strokes [even on their own] and is also proactive - giving warning before the stroke has actually occurred.
I agree my way of assessing the potential value of this product lacks precision - how would you suggest one goes about it? I did, of course, list every assumption I made, so perhaps you would like to suggest alternative scenarios?
You make valid points about "evidence based" and "cost effective" medicine. The BioSite test is wholly evidence based. The cost of a 15 min bedside test by a triage nurse is likely to be vastly less than the current hour or two of consultant [plus support staff] time.
If you read the BioSite website you will see the steps that BioSite have taken to encourage the take-up of their heart Triage system. They are certainly addressing your points!
Richard
