Safeway may be pick of the bunch - Alex Brummer
SO far Britain has managed to avoid the worst of the worldwide downturn, thanks to buoyant consumer confidence. In 2003 I fear that may change and it will be the public sector which holds up the economy.
Despite any downdraft in consumption I am sticking with the retail sector for my 2003 pick. Last year I chose Boots, figuring that colds, flu and our obsession with the body beautiful would remain intact.
The shares held their own and beat the market. I expect Boots to beat analysts' expectations over Christmas.
My selection for 2003 is the currently unfashionable Safeway (200p). The last year was one of transition under Argentine boss Carlos Criado-Perez, now under pressure.
But at their present lowly rating Safeway shares offer a tasty dividend yield of 5% and sell at a price earnings ratio of eight, against 19 for rival Morrisons. This makes Safeway a tasty morsel for a predator like Asda/Wal-Mart or for a private equity buyout. Either way, the shares offer upside.
