There are many reasons for formation damage. It does not mean the we don't have loads of hydrocarbons.

Quite correct and it is quite common in countries like Colombia were their geology can be quite difficult.
You never know how a reservoir will respond until you drill it and find out its little quirks.
As I say over balanced mud infiltration on a first well is quite common but once you have a degree of confidence in your findings the next time you drill you would treat the well differently.
( Different types of mud’s and pressures )
In fact as an example I am waiting for a company to drill a new well on a prospect they first successfully drilled about 1999 and produced from one reservoir level at over 4,000 bopd
The next level produced oil but in limited quantities because of mud infiltration resulting in formation damage.
In fact they have such a degree of confidence that this was the problem that next year they are going to spend $ 20 to $25 to drill a deep new well to produce from the upper and lower reservoirs.
Back to PCI.
PCI will now have a wealth of knowledge after drilling these 2 wells so the chances of formation damage happening again are vastly reduced.
