Ireland's Petrel Resources has teamed up with Japan's Itochu as the duo get to work on Iraq's Merjan oilfield.
The co-operation deal will also see the pair work together on exploration and production projects in the future.
Petrel said the Merjan job is part of a technical co-operation agreement reached with the Iraqi Ministry of Oil.
As part of the deal, Itochu will contribute to Petrel's historic costs in the Iraqi play and will cover a fixed share of the costs of the current study.
