Iraq enters 2006 teetering between hope, chaos
AFP - Mon Dec 26,11:15 PM ET
"Some talk openly about an unofficial civil war between the minority Sunni Arabs and majority Shiites, who were suppressed by Baghdad for decades.
Furthermore the emergence of a Shiite and Kurdish-dominated transitional government in Iraq has seen the regime move closer to Iran amid spats with Sunni Arab neighbours for failing to help contain the insurgency.
Nevertheless, Iraq has not disintegrated.
For now at least there is the hope that a working alliance between the Kurdish north and Shiite south, bolstered by Sunni participation in government, will not precipitate a full break-up."
