I did the same as Ladron whenever there was a job to be done like plumbing, electrics,decorating, servicing the car etc etc. Get a good book on it and have a go.
There is a tremendous amount of pleasure to be had from standing back to say "I did that". The last big thing I did was to build myself a conservatory and the amount of people who exclaim "you did this yourself?" is nice.
Don't forget the invaluable internet either. A simple search will always turn up something relevant and helpful.
