LGC has developed a rapid DNA probe technology (“HyBeacon” technology) for diagnostics and coupled it
with a direct from saliva sampling approach to achieve a DNA diagnosis at point-of care (sample to patient in 15-30 minutes). This technology has now been licensed to Osmetech, a US biotech company, which has
developed it for Factor V Leiden (FVL) testing. Osmetech is interested in setting up a UK collaboration to
validate this FVL assay, which runs on a Roche Lightcycler system. LGC approached Oxford GKP about
this, although any collaboration would be purely with Osmetech. In deciding whether to pursue this
opportunity we need to consider whether we could access approx 100 mouthswab samples, whether we have
access to the Lightcycler technology, whether we have sufficient manpower and what the terms of any
collaboration would be.
