Mattel Inc. licenses NXT technology
Release date: 22 Apr 2004
Mattel Inc, the world's largest toy company with headquarters in Los Angeles, California, has taken a license to use NXT technology across all its brands and subsidiaries.
Mattel Inc. includes American Girl, Barbie, Fisher Price and Hot Wheels and has annual sales of over $5bn. Dedicated to its vision of producing 'the world's premier toy brands - today and tomorrow', Mattel has taken a license to explore how it can apply the unique benefits of NXT technology to enhance the child's experience of its toy products.
Key amongst these benefits is the fact that with NXT loudspeakers the grille can be removed from the toy's structure. This removes a weak spot in the toy's defense against inquiring fingers and spilt liquids and food. In addition, the fact that NXT technology relies on the vibration of a panel means that speakers can be integrated into the toy in new ways, opening up new possibilities in toy design and the child's interaction with it. Intelligibility and recognizability are also likely to be enhanced with NXT technology.
Darin Barri, Director of New Technology, Mattel said: 'NXT loudspeakers offer us an exciting new way of adding audio to our products. By making the toy itself the loudspeaker we potentially open up a number of new and exciting directions in the design of our toys. Audio can now become part of the toy experience in a way not possible with conventional loudspeakers'.
A number of projects using NXT technology are now under consideration at Mattel Inc. and as the cost of components, such as exciters, falls so this number will increase.

Now with the DOZENS of new products brought out using NXT exciters, thus being made in far higher volumes, the price MUST have dropped substantially?
