Is NXT tech being used and what affect on the bottom line?

The development cycles of the automotive industry are among the longest of all our target sectors. Like all embedded sectors, tangible results can be slow to observe but encouragingly, we registered progress during the year. The four TVR models – which pair NXT’s AFR drive units with a subwoofer - have not only evidenced the roadworthiness of the technology, but have also acted as significant flagships for NXT in helping us to pursue other automotive opportunities. In January we announced the first North American NXT solution, Intier’s environmentally robust loudspeaker aimed at the recreational vehicle (RV) market. The AudioLITE has been specifically developed to provide a rugged, weather and waterproof loudspeaker solution for external usage, and has already been successfully installed on Dutchmen RVs. More recently, the announcement from Kenwood of its NXT-based centre channel loudspeaker affirmed the technology’s relevance to the automotive sector. As in-car entertainment options increase and space-saving becomes more of an issue than ever before, we are confident that the variety of applications for NXT technology will increase.
QinetiQ, continues to make progress in the aerospace sector, and through its partnership with Lufthansa Technik, has pioneered the concept of direct excitation of the interior trim of an aircraft, launching two Boeing 737s in the private aviation sector. The jets utilise NXT technology to turn the interior trim panels into flat, zero footprint loudspeakers which are used to great effect as part of the in-flight entertainment and PA system. QinetiQ has now started work on other PA applications in both the private and civil aviation sectors.
Touch screens – DST
3M announced its first commercial product to utilise Dispersive Signal Technology (DST) in early September 2005. This preliminary release 40” application – an NEC LCD screen – is available to purchase in the US now and is the first model in a range of large format (over 30”) touch screens to incorporate the 3M MicroTouch™ DST Touch Screen and Controller.
3M envisages applications for the technology in a diverse range of market sectors including conference rooms, educational facilities, financial exchanges, retail point of sale and advertisements, transportation, and a variety of indoor venues such as casinos, exhibitions, clubs and restaurants. We are equally optimistic about the technology given its inherent advantages over both of its competitive rivals - resistive and capacitive touch screen technologies.
Throughout the year we have continued to work directly with 3M in evolving the technology, which was the subject of an exclusive licence agreement in 2003. As products come through to market, NXT will announce their arrival and significance, detailing applications and capabilities. However, due to the nature of the exclusivity agreement, it is 3M’s prerogative to choose when products will be officially launched, irrespective of whether they are undergoing public trials.
