Eni to invest 10 bln eur in 2006-2011 in gas sector, 1 bln on LNG terminal
MILAN (AFX) - Eni SpA plans to invest 10 bln eur over 2006-2011 in the gas
sector, including 1 bln on an LNG regasification terminal in the Adriatic, said
Eni CEO Paolo Scaroni at a parliament hearing.
According to documents filed with the parliamentary committee, the
regasification terminal will have a capacity of 8 bln cubic metres a year, and
have 15-30 kilometres offshore.
"It is still not known where the gas terminal will be built. Certainly, it
will be in a zone where we have disused platforms. There are a lot of options in
the Adriatic," Scaroni said.
"It will take some years to complete. We will have it available after 2010,"
he said.
Italy is aiming to build a series of LNG import terminals, in addition to
Eni's single Italian terminal near La Spezia in the north east, and to cut
reliance on pipeline imports.
Industry officials said they believe the investments are part of Eni's usual
three-year strategic plan, to be updated in early 2007, but were unable to say
what the other areas of investment are.
