Britain has knack for heroic failures

MONOTUB’S washing machine follows a long line of ambitious projects in which the British passion for making things has, sadly, failed to triumph over commercial realities.
In Monotub’s case the basic design seemed robust, but only on paper. The manufactured product was clearly wanting, compromising its ability to gain acceptance on the high street.

It is a testament, however, to the nation’s perseverance that anybody would consider inventing anything after the launch and failure of the Sinclair C5, the battery-powered three-wheeler that Sir Clive Sinclair, its inventor, heralded as the transport of the future.

Neither is Monotub the only AIM-quoted company to hit production problems. NMT’s early promise of a high-tech safety syringe with a retractable needle has quickly turned into a litany of manufacturing problems and doubts over commercial prospects.

Even so, there seems no need for pessimism as the success of the Dyson vacuum cleaner will inspire Britain’s boffins to keep poring over their drawing boards.
