Well John Cross himself confirmed that they WERE buying from garimperos at the meeting! He acknowledged that the area the security guys had to protect is huge, and they quite simply can't keep all the locals out.
He said the garimperos normally sold to the guy that runs the local shop, and NML were buying for modest sums. I think that is fine, I would too.
He also said they were working with some garimperos in the exploration phase, which seems entirely sensible to me. You can't beat local knowledge IMHO!
In one of the other African countries, a garimpero recently found a huge diamond BTW.
