Who cares what the critics think. It was reasonable entertainment. You have to question what exactly these critics expect when they go see a Lara Croft film.
I don't suppose it's difficult to guess who Eidos were targeting with Lara. Maybe she appeals as much to women as to men - after all she's assertive, independant, intellegient, etc - not a bad role model!
Lots of women do dress up as Lara, apparently, perhaps they do this because the character appeals more to men. Certainly she was designed by a man (do men make the best candidates for designing these characters?!). I heard the chap who originally conceived / designed her left Eidos before the company capitalised on the work he was paid to do.
Premature resignation - a not uncommon problem amongst the male population.
Thankfully Forbidden have the will power to stay the course and see this job through to a successful conclusion.
