Qatar becomes world’s top LNG exporter - l'list 29/12/06


Qatar has fulfilled its ambition of becoming the world's leading exporter of liquefied natural gas, breaking Indonesia’s 30-year grip on the top spot, writes Tony Gray.

The emirate’s projects will ship 25m-26m tonnes this year, Qatar Liquefied Gas Co spokesman Abdulla M. Hijji told Bloomberg.

Indonesia will supply 22.6m tonnes, said John Sunarmo, head of LNG at the state oil company Pertamina. Malaysia’s output is expected to be similar in scale to that of Indonesia’s. Over the next few years, Qatar is expected to consolidate its hold as the world’s largest LNG exporter. Qatar plans to be exporting no less than 77m tonnes by 2012.............




Qatar Gas Transport Co plans to raise about $770m through a cash call on shareholders to support the company’s ambitious liquefied natural gas carrier newbuilding programme.

The company’s decision to trigger the second tranche of equity follows the completion of a $4.3bn debt programme earlier this month.

QGTC is calling up the 50% of its capital that remains unpaid — Riyals2.8bn ($770m) — following the 2005 initial public offering.

Then the company’s capital base was established at Riyals5.6bn, but only half was paid up.

“With a view to financing the purchase of further tankers it is necessary to provide the remaining capital by April,” QGTC said.
