I think Putin and the Russians have done us all a favour by highlighting how unreliable they are as a Gas supplier in Europe, this has certainly stirred things up in the market with gas prices rising and creating temporary shortage of supplies, EU Countries Uk included should now be looking out for alternative supplies of Gas.

"Hudong yard launches its first LNG carrier"

(Lloyds List Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Shanghai yard Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding has launched its first liquefied natural gas carrier, writes Keith Wallis in Hong Kong .

The $200m, 147,200 cu m Dapeng Sun is one of three LNG carriers being built to transport LNG from Australia's North-West Shelf project to a new terminal at Shenzhen in southern China.

Speaking earlier this year Zhang Xiangmu, a senior official with the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence, said: 'The construction of China's first LNG carrier implies that China's shipbuilding industry has entered a new phase, and it will make the industry more competitive in the world market.'

The three ships, together with two vessels for a similar terminal in Fujian, will be operated by China LNG Shipping (Holdings), a joint venture between China Ocean Shipping (Group), China Merchants Group and China National Offshore Oil Corporation.

The Dapeng Sun is due to be delivered in October, 2007. Sister vessel Dapeng Moonwill follow in early 2008.

CNOOC is expected to commission the $846m Guangong LNG project by the middle of next year.

The Dapeng Moon is 292 m long and 43.35 m wide.

Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding at present has orders for five LNG carriers including two 147,000 cu m vessels costing $320m that will transport LNG to the Fujian terminal.

The yard is building the ships with technical assistance from Chantiers de l'Atlantique of France and Shell Shipping ' Trading.
