The slide of the New Zealand dollar overnight may be the start of a long term downward trend.
The dollar has plunged two percent and began the day trading at just over 69 US cents. ANZ National Bank Chief Economist John McDermott this could be the start of the expected big drop in the value of the New Zealand dollar as other countries start to increase interest rates, while ours will remain steady.
But he says it is highly unlikely the dollar will drop to the record low 40 US cent level seen four years ago.
