PAUL MERSON has put the boot into Liverpool's championship chances and claims the Reds are still not good enough to win the Premiership.
Phil Thompson's team ended their recent mini-slump with a 2-1 win at Villa Park on Boxing Day.
But Merson was unconvinced by the Merseysiders and reckons they will still be trailing Arsenal and Manchester United in the championship run-in.
Even the arrival of on-loan Nicolas Anelka for the rest of the season has not convinced former title-winner Merson of Liverpool's credentials.
"Liverpool beat us on Wednesday but they didn't impress me. We played a good team but you wouldn't have thought they were the team near the top and we were the team that is struggling. People often say that if you can play badly and win football matches then you win championships. If they keep grinding out results... but I don't see it. Arsenal and Manchester United look the main two to me for the title. They are the only two teams in the league who are capable of winning 10 games on the trot. When United recently went out to 10-1 with the bookmakers, I thought that was a bit steep especially given the games that they had coming up. Liverpool have now signed Nicolas Anelka and to me he is one of the best centre forwards that I have seen. But I still see the other two (Manchester United and Arsenal) scoring more goals. In any case, Anelka has got to get back being used to playing in the Premiership. It's not like French football, is it?"
