NEWS 19.12.2006 Gambling Ban to Be Lifted in Ireland Citizens of Northern Ireland have 14 weeks to discuss whether the bookmakers and bingo halls in Northern Ireland should be opened on Sundays. The government introduced the changes in the gambling law that would allow bookmakers to open between 1030 GMT and 1830 GMT and bingo clubs to open between 1400 GMT and 2300 GMT.
The officials also plan to protect those workers who do not want to work on Sundays. David Hanson, Minister for Social Development underlined that this factor is crucially important for the new proposals to be approved. He stated that the new law should be enclosed with the law which would grant employment rights to such workers
In case the law is approved by the public it could come into effect in 2008.
