Short selling has been going on since the late Nineteenth Century and poosibly earlier. Your pension fund will probably be short in something or will have a holding in organisations that shaort
IMHO there is nothing wrong with shorting, it is a market correction mechanism that is justa s valid as gearing up and going long.
The problem, with both short and long, is when the size of the speculative positions become significant against ordinary trading days or market cap or when people take other action to try and put their position on the winning side eg 700 posts/day on bulletin boards, press articles etc
I trade US and UK. most UK stoicks are illiquid when compared with US and can be easily manipulated by MMs or a single trader using techniques that would get then 25 to life if they did it in US.
I take the view that value will out in the longer run. If something is really woth 100 and it gets shorted to 20 it was a buying opportunity as the price will recover, it always does. If the price is 200 and the value is 100 and it gets shorted........it is painful for the holders but, it is an accelerated market correction it was going to happen anyway.
In times past, before derivs were widely available, a correction might take weeks/months and tended to be gentle now it can happen in 5 minutes and tends to overshoot
