Multiplex Wembley job a 'fiasco' - Mayor
December 23, 2005 - 7:54AM
London mayor Ken Livingstone has described Multiplex Group's troubled redevelopment of Wembley Stadium as a "fiasco".
Multiplex, an Australian construction company, has said there is a "material risk" that the 90,000 seat arena will not be completed in time to host the FA Cup final on May 13.
The project has become so costly that Multiplex has warned that $165 million might be wiped from its profit during the current financial year.
The English FA has Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on standby to host the final of the time-honoured knockout competition, as it had done for the past five years.
"If I was booking a train ticket right now I would most probably get one out to Wales, rather than up to Wembley," Mr Livingstone said.
"This is exactly the sort of fiasco which has informed the way we are going to construct the sites there.
"This went wrong from the beginning because people who weren't architects and builders kept interfering, changing design - the costs kept mounting."
Wembley has also been booked to host an England-Hungary international friendly on May 30, followed by England-Paraguay on June 10.
Multiplex's deadline to deliver the stadium is March 31.
