very quick, I can see no advantage in using ethanol in aeroplanes. Don't forget that burning ethanol still produces CO2. It's just that ethanol is non-polluting for the full cycle because the C in ethanol is obtained from the atmosphere. The danger of using ethanol in aeroplanes is that you are replacing a tried and tested technology with a non-tested one. Another point is that aircraft produce nitrogen oxides which affect ozone (producing it in the lower atmosphere and destroying it in the stratosphere). Nitrogen oxides arise from the high operating temperatures of the engines, rather than the fuel, so if you change the technology there is some impact there. Further, there may be a weight disadvantage in carrying ethanol compared with carrying aviation fuel. It is best all round to keep ethanol on the ground in my view!
