The electoral system (first past the post) can result in surprises. However, many seem of the opinion that Labour will win again. I think the only way to 'punish' New Labour, is for individual seats (Blair/Brown & cronies) to be targeted by tactical voting, spoiler or perhaps high-profile celebrity independant candidates. A returned Labour government minus most of the current cabinet and apologists, would be a result of sorts. Unfortunately, the Hartlepool by-election result would seem to indicate that many UK voters ultimately get the government they deserve...
Martin Bell to stand in Sedgefield? (October 13, 2004)
An interesting development on the horizon - according to Andrew Marr Martin Bell is thinking of standing against Tony Blair in Sedgefield at the next election, in the hope that the other main parties will stand down and give him a clear run. Blair had a 44% majority at the last election, but then again, Neil Hamilton had a notional majority of 43%.
UPDATE: The Evening Standard and the Mail on Sunday apparantly told different stories. Bell himself told the Standard he was too old to do it personally, but it looking to pursuade someone else. His own suggestions in the Mail on Sunday were Kate Adie, Ray Mallon or Sir Crispin Tickell.
