Rising UK tax bucks the trend
Britain is defying a global trend towards falling tax burdens and a smaller state, a leading pressure group claimed yesterday after OECD figures highlighted the UK’s rising tax take, and public spending climbing above levels seen in leading competitor countries.
Britain’s total state spending as a proportion of national income (GDP) is planned to rise next year to a level above that in Germany for the first time since at least 1989, the data from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development showed.
The figures also indicated that while 18 out of 28 rich nations covered will see their tax burdens as a share of GDP fall between now and 2008, Britain is one of only seven countries where the tax burden is scheduled to climb.
Corin Taylor of the Taxpayers’ Alliance said the data showed Britain was “out of step” with world trends, putting the economy at risk.
